Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Your web site is your window to the world. It is your Infomercial. People will judge your company's credibility by what they see on your web site.
Following are some of the SEO techniques that should be included in every web site. Each web page is indexed separately so care must be taken to optimize each page for the content on that page only. Usually the default page ranks the highest but this is not always the case.
Web site Design:
- Page Titles: Page Title should show and reflect the content on the page. If possible incorporate a common search term in the title but do not go out of your way to spam key words. Search engines look for key word spam and may discount that page.
- Meta Key words: Should be short and descriptive of the page content. Do not spam them.
- Meta Description: The description must describe the content on that page. It can be a little longer but try to get everything important into one or two short easy to read sentences. The first couple of lines will appear in the search results. Especially if the words searched are included in the meta description.
- URL Rewrite: Rewrite the url to include the key words in the page title. If possible make them the same. If you have 2 or more words in the url rewrite, separate them with a dash or minus sign (eg waste-management). Your url rewrite would then look like this mywebsite.com/waste-management.asp. (Most search engines treat the - as no space, a space or comma.) The words waste management (in this order) should then be in the Title, Meta Key Words, Meta Description, and in the content.
- All images, categories, and products should be titled (mouse over) if possible. This will provide 2 or more occurrences of the word combinations to the search engines. Again they should reflect the content on that page.
- Renew your domain name to the maximum allowed (10 years). Some search engines will weight this a bit higher. It is a sign of a stable site.
- Change your content regularly. Search engines think this is a sign the site is being used and will weight it higher. Each page should be easy to read and view.
- Once your site is live, submit it to Yahoo.com for a directory listing (cost about $300/yr). Many of the other search engines seem to like this.
- Your site look or appeal should be designed with your audience in mind. The content, look, feel and navigation should be appropriate for your target market.
Choose a good web host. We recommend Resposio.com. They have other additional little SEO tricks for a small fee.
No matter what you do, it usually takes at least a year for your site to be indexed properly by the Search Engines.
